Saturday Afternoon Classes

1. Financial Skills & Planning

In this class, we will focus on setting meaningful financial goals and learning how a clear plan and a realistic budget can help turn those goals into reality, along with understanding what an IRA is and the benefits of saving for retirement. As taught in Mosiah 4:27, " All these things are done in wisdom and order", reminding us that thoughtful planning is key to financial success.

Teacher Bio: My name is Anna Meliza, and I am a Private Client Advisor with Key Investment Services. I have over 20 years of experience in the financial industry specializing in financial planning and financial education, and I am passionate about helping individuals and families gain confidence in their financial future. I am married with 3 kids. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling with my husband and spending time with my dogs Ollie, and Tobie.

2. The Secret Sauce to a Better Social Life

The best communicators aren't the most interesting—they're the most interested. We spend a lot of energy trying to be more confident, successful, and impressive. What if we took a different approach? Learn how curiosity, empathy, and genuine interest can help you create meaningful conversations and authentic relationships. We’ll practice simple skills that make people feel seen, heard, and valued—whether you're meeting someone for the first time or building a lasting relationship.

Teacher Bio:

Julie Hillyard helps people build stronger relationships by teaching them how to have the conversations that matter most—especially when they’re hard.
She studied psychology at BYU, taught classes to male inmates and mentored women in the Utah State Prison. During her professional career, she had the incredible opportunity to work with Dr. Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, as he wrote The 8th Habit, helping him deliver presentations to leaders around the world. Since then, she has taught, trained, and consulted in a wide variety of settings. She and her husband have three kids, including one with a rare genetic disorder called Phelan-McDermid Syndrome. She loves Pickleball, running, and marshmallows.

3. Learning From Symbols in the House of the Lord

We can learn much about Jesus Christ through the symbols found in the house of the Lord.

Teacher Bio:

Brother Edgardo Gubelin is a child of God, a child of the covenant and a disciple of Jesus Christ. On September 21, 1995 he married for time and all eternity his best friend Lia London Gubelin in the Portland Oregon Temple. They are the parents of three children and the grandparents of two grandchildren.

Brother Gubelin loves the youth and young adults. He has taught seminary and institute for many years. One of his favorite callings was to be called as a nursery leader. He now teaches institute at the Corvallis Institute, a home away from home for all his amazing students.

4. The Real Obstacle to Being Christlike

Becoming like Christ is the lifelong invitation we've all been given, but it's often much harder than it sounds, especially when we're dealing with difficult people or uncomfortable situations. In this workshop, we'll explore what it really means to be Christlike in conflict and why avoiding hard conversations isn't always the loving choice. Together, we'll examine how the way we see ourselves in relation to others can become one of the biggest obstacles to healthy relationships and true discipleship. As we learn to see ourselves and others the way God does, we'll discover practical tools for navigating conflict with greater courage, compassion, and Christlike love.

Teacher Bio:

Kasha Coombs is passionate about helping people build stronger relationships, navigate conflict with confidence, and create communities where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Raised in Northern California, Kasha caught the travel bug early, spending a gap year exploring the world before earning a bachelor's degree in Peacebuilding with a certificate in mediation from BYU–Hawaii. Along the way, she's had the opportunity to work in wilderness therapy with young adults, lead international gap year programs, consult with the Arbinger Institute, and eventually make her way to Oregon to join the Mountain West Foundation.

Since 2020, Kasha has trained leaders, educators, teens, and community members throughout the Salem area in practical skills for healthy communication, conflict resolution, and stronger relationships. Most recently, she served as Director of Project PEACE, where she helped young people and families develop the tools and language to work through conflict in healthy, meaningful ways.

When she's not talking about relationships or conflict, you'll probably find Kasha planning a murder mystery party, belting out karaoke, visiting family in California, or hosting friends for a game night or backyard gathering with her husband. She believes that the most important thing in this world is people—and she's excited to share tools that can help make your relationships deeper and more intentional.
